Chapter 8

Darcy delayed his return to Netherfield so that he arrived after Elizabeth. He took another ride around the estate, his heart pounding with joy. He was engaged! As incredible as it sounded, Elizabeth was his betrothed, and the taste of her lips on his was powerful proof to overcome any doubts.

She had loved him since she had left Pemberley, and since he had foolishly stayed away, she had expressed her love in her drawings. His portrait had been painted many times before, but no likeness was as vivid, as alive as the one sketched by Elizabeth. Elizabeth, his betrothed, he repeated while his horse galloped across the fields.

He finally returned home, leaving his horse at the stables. As soon as he entered, the butler informed him that the rest of the party had already gathered for breakfast. He gave his coat, gloves, and hat to a footman and went to the dining room, greeting everybody.

“Mr Darcy, where have you been?” Miss Bingley asked. “A servant said you had gone out, but nobody knew where. We were all worried!”

“I deeply apologise,” he responded. “I woke up early and went for a ride. I lost track of time. I am sorry for worrying you.”

“I told them that would be the case,” Bingley said. “I know your habits well.”

“I very much like early morning rides,” Lord Colborne interjected.

“Next time, Darcy, let me know. I would like some exercise,” Hurst said.

“So would I,” Lynch added.

“A ride must be the best way of getting to know the neighbourhood,” Cranford said.

Darcy cast a quick glance at Elizabeth, then responded, “I can safely say that this morning’s ride will remain unique. From now on, I shall inform you all when I plan another activity.”

“Could we take a carriage ride to see your estate, Mr Bingley?” Miss Cranford enquired.

“Of course. I can arrange it at any time you want. Just let me know when and who would be interested, ladies,” Mr Bingley offered.

“We could go tomorrow,” Miss Bingley said. “Two carriages should suffice.”

“Hopefully, the children will not come. It would be too tiring and too cold for them,” Lady Ophelia said. Darcy saw Lord Greenwood turning slightly pale.

“I had no intention of involving the children,” the earl said. “As you may have noticed, they are having breakfast in their rooms, with their governess, to avoid bothering you. I shall take a separate ride with them if they wish to go.”

“You should not be upset, Lord Greenwood. I am sure Lady Ophelia was only considering what was in the children’s best interests,” Miss Bingley said

“I am not upset, Miss Bingley,” the earl replied, his tone contradicting his words.

“A carriage ride would be enjoyable for those who are not acquainted with Netherfield,” Darcy said. “The weather is excellent at present, and I am sure Miss Bingley and Mrs Hurst will be fine hosts.”

“So, I assume you will not join us?” Lady Cecilia asked.
